C.E. “Jake” Johns, 91 of Washington, died Monday, September 25, 2017 at Presbyterian Senior Care Southminister Place.
He was born March 19, 1926 in Washington, the son of the late Michael and Mary Louise Oretella Johns.
Jake graduated from Immaculate Conception High School and attended Canterbury College in Danville, IN., where he was a member of the varsity football team and the Chi Sigma fraternity.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WWII, where he received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
Jake worked as a welder and storeroom clerk at National Annealing Box for 33 years, Washington City Police, William G. Neal Funeral Home Ltd. for 12 years and was a Washington County Constable for 30 years.
He was an 83-year member of Immaculate Conception Church, where he was an usher for 56 years. He has been of member of St. Hilary since March 2010.
Jake was a member of the American Legion Post #175, former member of the VFW, FOP and Sons of Italy.
On August 11, 1955, he married Mildred “Millie” Ruth Wilson, who survives. They were married for 62 years.
Also surviving are two sons, Stephen E. (Tina) Johns of Midland, TX and George M. (Tina) Johns of Huntington Beach, CA; a daughter, Mary (John) Sumney of Washington; 10 grandchildren, Angela and Michael Johns Kendra, Kelsey and Kayla Johns and Tommy Pham, Sarah (Dan) Stockdale, Daniel Sumney, and Chelsea Sumney, Shaina (Brandon) Kernodle; a great grandchild, Lincoln Stockdale.
Deceased are five brothers, Boots, Tony, Nick, Joe, Lou and Antonio, who died infancy; three sisters, Ange Cipoletti Camden, Rose Whetsell and Esther, who died infancy.
Friends will be received Friday, October 6, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at William G. Neal Funeral Home Ltd., 925 Allison Ave, Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church with Father Carmen D’Amico as celebrant. Burial is private at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
Military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post #175.
