Lloyd Vincent Knox

Lloyd Vincent Knox, 98, of Washington, died on Sunday, September 17, 2017, in the Donnell House. He was born on February 16, 1919, in Grindstone, a son of the late Wilbur S., and Catherine Wensing Knox. Mr. Knox was a 1937 graduate of Redstone High School. Lloyd was a member of the National Guard, serving as a medic, during WWII, with the 28th Medical Detachment Division. During water training, he ruptured an ear drum, which caused him to be hospitalized, and subsequently quarantined, due to his knowledge of the Normandy Invasion plans. Following his injury, he was transferred to the F Company 347 Engineers General Service Regiment. Mr. Knox served during the Battle of the Bulge, and was Honorably Discharged on October 6, 1945. For his service, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, with four bronze stars. He worked as a bus mechanic for Blue Ridge Bus Company, in Washington, Gradison Bus Company, in Burgettstown, and retired from Suburban Bus Company, in Washington. Following his retirement, he drove a school bus for G.G.&C., and Schweinebraten Bus Company, until he was eighty-three years old. He was a member of North Buffalo Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder, and Trustee, and a member of the Buffalo Grange #1533. A life member of the National Rifle Association, he was also a member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion, Washington Masonic Lodge #164, Coudersport Consistory, and Trout Unlimited. Lloyd enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, making bird houses, dartball, watching sports, and playing cards. He was especially well-known for raising huge onions, and sharing his homegrown vegetables, and he had a passion for helping everyone, and fixing anything. On August 3, 1942, he married Winnie Louise Burnside, who passed away on October 10, 2013, following seventy-one years of marriage. Surviving are two sons, Gerald M. (Susan) Knox, of Warren, and Rev. Robert Daniel (Pamela) Knox, of Ambridge; two daughters, Marilyn Louise (Douglas) Ward, of Washington, and Linda Lee (John) Morgan, of Canonsburg; a brother, Wendell (Virginia) Knox, of Daytona, FL, and a sister, Thelma Angeline, of Grindstone; eight grandchildren, Tamara (Carl) Rotunda, Daniel Ward, Sarah (Jonathon) Maffet, Dr. James (Jenny) Knox, Jesse (Paige) Knox, Rachel (the late Randy) Payne, April (Doug) Hincy, and John Morgan; thirteen great grandchildren, Blake Montour, Gina, Morgan, and Carl Rotunda, Jr., Abigail, Jacob, Lydia and Susanna Maffet, Aiden and Logan Payne, Eoin and Tamhas Knox, and Fiona Hincy; as well as several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a granddaughter, Jodi Wiler, and two sisters, Genevieve and Mildred Knox. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. An additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Friday, September 22, in North Buffalo Presbyterian Church, 711 Rural Valley Road, Washington, with Pastor Gary Gibson and the Rev. R. Daniel Knox officiating. Burial will follow in North Buffalo Church Cemetery, with military rites accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
