William “Bill” Canan, 92, of Washington, died Friday, January 20, 2017, in the Washington Hospital. He was born on August 26, 1924, in the West End of Washington, a son of Edward Myers Canan and Mary Helen Lyle Canan. Mr. Canan spent his early years in the West End, moving to Buffalo Township at the age of eight, where he attended a one-room school on Highland Ridge Road. He graduated from Trinity High School in 1942. Mr. Canan served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 and the Pulaski Club and was a former Mason. Mr. Canan worked for 40 years as a mould maker and tool maker with Hazel Atlas #1, Brockway, Metro, and Penn Mould, retiring from Ball Glass in 1981. For 25 years, he was associated with his brother, Que, in the auction business. He also enjoyed going to flea markets with his wife and playing pool. In 1949, he married Virginia Davidson with whom he enjoyed 66 years of happy marriage before her passing on January 15, 2016. Surviving are a son, William Douglas (Joanne) Canan of Moon Township; two daughters, Donna Lee (Ed) Sukel of Washington and Linda Canan (Mark) Stephens of Burk, Virginia; grandchildren, Kristy (Andy) Bilderback, twins Brooke (Kevin) Dobson and Brittany (Jason) Pinney; Katie (Doug) Rizzo, Ben (Keira) Canan, Zachary Stephens, Annie Stephens and Stephen Osborn; six great-grandchildren, Anna and Liam Bilderback, Myla and Lucas Pinney, Madelyn Dobson and Adam Rizzo; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Canan of Claysville; and several nieces and nephews. He was the last of his immediate family. Preceding him in death were sisters, Nellie Post and Josephine White, and brothers, Edward Canan Jr. and Quentin Canan. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, January 25th. Burial will be private in Claysville Cemetery.
