Mary Shearer, of Washington, formerly of Canonsburg, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2017. She was born May 14, 1933, in Canonsburg, a daughter of the late William and Mary Daley Swihart. Mrs. Shearer graduated from Chartiers High School and was May Queen of her class. She was also voted “Most Likely to Succeed” in her class. Crossword and jigsaw puzzles, along with Scrabble, were favorite pastimes, as well as computer games and emailing. Mrs. Shearer retired from Western Center. On July 30, 1955, she married Clarence Shearer of Venetia in Saint Patrick Church, Canonsburg. Mr. Shearer passed away on August 6, 2016. Surviving are a daughter, Mary G. O’Brien, wife of Denny, of Washington; three sons, David Shearer and wife Mia, of Clearwater, Florida, (Retired) Colonel Eugene Shearer and wife Hey Jin of Nokeville, Virginia, and Todd Shearer, husband of Amy, of Greenwood, South Carolina. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Dennis C. O’Brien, Jr., Kate DeGarmo and husband Kevin, Julia and Joshua Shearer of Nokeville, Virginia, Alyssa, Courtney and Richard Shearer of Greenwood, South Carolina; and three great-granddaughters, Kaeli and Kenna DeGarmo and Maci O’Brien, all of Washington. Deceased, in addition to her parents, are three brothers, William, Thomas and Eugen Swihart. She was the last of her immediate family. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. At the request of the deceased, a private funeral service will be held followed by burial in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Peters Township.
