Donald G. Emery, 83 of Washington passed away early Saturday, November 12, 2016.
He was born September 25, 1933 in Washington, a son of the late Glenn and Elizabeth Johnson Emery.
He graduated from Washington High School, and earned his undergraduate degree in education from California University of Pennsylvania, and his master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
Mr. Emery was a member of the ROTC program in college, and upon graduation, went on to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps, earning the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps, Mr. Emery returned home to Washington, and began a career in education at the Washington School District, where he taught industrial arts and driver’s training. He later went on to become the district’s Home and School visitor, handling social work and truancy for the district until his retirement. He was also a licensed realtor, and worked for GG&C Bus Company as a driver in his retirement.
He served on Washington City Council and the Washington School Board, and was a member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Pennsylvania Advisory Board, representing teachers in our region.
Mr. Emery loved working with his hands, building and repairing many projects, and taking care of the home he helped to build.
On June 10, 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Ann Carroll, who died November 11, 2012.
Surviving are a son, Bryan of Washington; a daughter Kristin, also of Washington, a sister-in-law, Nancy Andrew, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Deceased in addition to his wife and parents are a brother, Charles (Blanche) Emery, a sister, Gwendolyn (Jack) Moore, and a brother-in-law, Edwin Andrew.
Friends will be received Tuesday, November 15, 2016 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Ave, Washington, where services will be held Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 1:00 p.m., with Rev. Donna Johnson officiating.
Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Gardens.
