John Dorsey Bungard, died Saturday, July 9th in his home.
He was born July 27, 1936 to the late Alexander B. Bungard and Ethel Neebling Bungard in Washington. His grandmother, the late Anna Dora Neebling attended his birth.
He was a 1956 graduate of Trinity High School. He began his schooling in a four room school house in Buffalo, PA and later attended a one-room schoolhouse on Lynn Portal Rd before attending Wolfdale School.
Growing up, he was active in 4-H and the Future Farmer of America. He collected milkweed pods during World War II to aid in the manufacture of parachute cords for the war effort.
After graduating high school, he joined the U.S. Airforce and was in one of the last graduating classes to leave Lackland Air Base before it closed. He was a veteran Air Policeman who guarded airbases in England and Spain during the Francisco Franco government when the bases were being built.
Following his military service, he was employed by Federal Paper Board Company in Washington and the PA Transformer Company in Canonsburg. Later he worked at The Greenery in Canonsburg and did security work.
He was an avid outdoorsman, hunting, fishing and trapping and passed these skills on to his surviving sons. He helped raise pheasants for Arden Sportsman Club as well as raising chickens and goats and created a safe haven for deer and wild turkeys. He and his sons enjoyed helping the PA Fishery Commission stock local streams for trout season each year.
He was a wealth of information on history and sports, especially the Pittsburgh Pirate Baseball Teams, the radio announcers’ broadcasts and specifics and stats on players. He had a wonderful sense of humor and had a special talent/gift for taking care of animals and taming wildlife.
Surviving are two sons, John E. Bungard and Mark D. Bungard both of Washington; a sister, Marilyn (Stephen) Frost of Ellwood City; a grandson, Mark D. Bungard Jr.; great grandson, Brendan Bungard; daughter in law Anne Bungard; several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Deceased in addition to his parents are two brothers, Alexander F. Bungard and wife Elizabeth “Betty” and James C. Bungard.
Friends will be received Tuesday, July 12, 2016 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.at William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Ave, Washington, where services will be held Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Brush Run Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside.
