Robin "Gil" Roy Gilfedder

Robin Roy “Gil” Gilfedder, 89 of Washington, died Friday June 17, 2016 at the Washington Hospital after a short illness. He was born May 25, 1927 in Plymouth, MA, the son of the late Patrick Gilfedder and Madeline Scully Gilfedder. In lived in Lowell, MA, during his childhood and graduated from St. Benedict High School. Gil was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during WWII in the pacific aboard the USS Chipola, supporting carrier task forces raiding Tokyo and other Japanese Islands, ultimately leading to the Japanese surrender and the end of World War II. He also served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War and received numerous medals including the Purple Heart. After returning from Korea, Gil became a Drill Instructor at Parris Island until he was honorably discharged from service in 1958. After leaving the military, he worked as a volunteer fireman for the City of Alexandria, VA. He worked for 34 years as a bus driver and safety and training instructor for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in Washington, D.C., before retiring in 1994 and moving to Washington, PA. After retiring he worked part time at G. G. & C Bus Company and as a bartender at the Fraternal Order of the Bears. Gil was a member of St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church, the Fraternal of the Eagles, Fraternal Order of the Bears, the Loyal Order of the Moose, the American Legion and the VFW. On February 8, 1964 he married the love of his life, Sherley McFadden, who survives. Also surviving are a son Kevin (Christine) Gilfedder of Sterling, VA; two grandchildren, Dylan and Hannah Gilfedder; brother in law, Robert (Edra) McFadden of Ohio, Charles McFadden of Texas; a sister in law, Shirlee McFadden of N.C. and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Tuesday, June 21, 2016 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Ave, Washington, PA. A mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church, with Father Thomas O’Neil as celebrant. Burial will follow at the Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post #175. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 3109 Forbes Ave, Suite 101, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.
