Betty J. (Mounts) Powell, 88, of Claysville, PA, died Thursday, March 31, 2016, in her home where she was cared for by her family and dog Kasey, following a 5 month illness. She was born June 12, 1927, in Buffalo Township, Washington, PA to Elmer N. Mounts and Della Mae Doman. She is survived by one brother, Harry E. (Marion) Mounts of Washington, PA. Two brothers and 5 sisters pre-deceased her. On November 28, 1947, she married John W. Powell, who died December 28, 2001. She resided in Buffalo Township her entire life. Except for a brief period of time, when she worked at Keystone Shoes, she was a housewife who enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning, hummingbirds, and volunteering in her community. She graduated from Trinity High School in 1945. She is survived by one son, David W. Powell (Darlene) of Claysville, PA; and three daughters: Kathryn McCulley (Harold Lee) of West Alexander, PA; Linda Altieri (Robert) of Wallingford, PA; and Susan Powell of Claysville, with whom she resided. She has seven grandchildren: April Brownlee, Heather Johnson (Jody), Erin Briggs (David), Ashley Hallett (Douglas), Breanne Altieri, Tiffiny (Jesse) Faith and Amber (Michael) Balaska and eight great-grandchildren: Luke Brownlee, Bethany Brownlee, Blake and Parker Johnson, Dakota and Rylee Briggs, Roman Balaska and Hadley Hallett. Betty was a lifetime member of American Legion Hunt-Kennedy Post 639 Ladies Auxiliary for 64 years where she served as President for many years. She was a member of the East Buffalo Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Women’s Missionary Society. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be given to Amedisys Hospice, 275 Meadowlands Blvd., Washington, PA 15301. Friends will be received Saturday from 6 till 8 p.m. and Sunday from Noon till 3 and 6 till 8 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, April 4th, with Pastor Linda Mankey officiating. Burial will follow in Claysville Cemetery.
