Loving father and husband, craftsman and builder, devoted servant of the Lord, Lloyd Cox left this earth March 2, 2016, in Fredericksburg, VA after a struggle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Admired by all for his kindness and integrity, he will be deeply and dearly missed. Lloyd was born in Tappan, Ohio and grew up in Tullahoma, Tennessee, where he graduated from high school. He moved to Washington, PA with his father, Lloyd Sr., a minister, and mother Hazel. In Washington he met his one true love, Ruth Huff. They married in 1958 and created a home, a family, and a long and happy life together for more than 50 years. Lloyd worked for Washington Steel for more than 30 years, and was exceptionally skilled with his hands, building two of his own homes from the ground up and helping with many others. His basement was a workman’s paradise, with every power tool imaginable. The epitome of his workmanship was a 1927 Chevrolet wooden-bed pickup that he restored to shining glory piece-by-piece, in which he loved to give rides to his grandchildren. But at the center of his life was the Lord and service to his fellow man. Lloyd was a member of the congregation of the Fairhill Manor Christian Church for 50 years. In addition to being the church’s “go-to guy” for anything that needed fixing, he was a participant in the Christian Men's Fellowship, a church trustee, and was honored as the first trustee emeritus. A member of the choir (he sang tenor, but if you asked him, he’d reply “ten or eleven”) he loved the old time hymns – This Little Light of Mine, Amazing Grace, and How Great Thou Art. He delighted in puns and comics, especially Pickles and Baby Blue, and, though he was a tender and gentle soul, he played to win at Dartball, Yahtzee, 500 Bid, Shanghai Rum, and just about every game he played. His siblings, Charles Cox and Ellen Pierson of Washington, and Esther Mosley of Tullahoma, TN preceded him in death. He is survived by his brother Harry of Tennessee, wife Ruth of Fredericksburg, VA, his children Evelyn Evano of Eugene, OR, Dan Cox of Palo Alto, CA, and Terri Shaffer of Gainesville, VA, and seven beautiful grandchildren. Friends will be received from 11:30 a.m. till 3 p.m., on Sunday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Additional visitation will be held from 11 a.m. till Noon, the time of service, on Monday, March 7th, in Fairhill Manor Christian Church, 351 Montgomery Avenue, Washington, with Rev. Michael Lehman officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be sent to Capital Caring Hospice, 2900 Telestar Court, Falls Church, VA 22042 or at www.capitalcaring.org.
