Wayne L. Gibson

Wayne L. “Hoot” Gibson of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, died Wednesday, January 6, 2016. He was born in Waynesburg, PA on January 9, 1948, a son of the late Lawrence Gibson and Bernice Briggs Gibson Condit. He was predeceased by his stepfather, Gerald H. Condit. Hoot spent his childhood growing up in Ten Mile, PA, attended Amity School and graduated from Trinity High School in 1965. Upon completion of his high school education he enlisted in the United States Navy where he spent 21 years until his honorable discharge and retirement in 1989 as a Senior Chief of the Cryptologic Technician Administration. He received several awards and medals during his naval career. Wayne then worked as a civilian for the United States Coast Guard and retired after thirteen years of service. He was a Silver Member of the Chief Petty Officers Association, a member of the Fleet Reserves Association Branch 293, and the U. S. Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association. Wayne was an avid softball player and was active in the Ten Mile Valley Softball Association where he played for Ten Mile and Amity. He enjoyed hunting and spending time at the Lone Pine Deer Camp in Emporium, PA. His true love was the game of golf and he played as often as he could in his home town in North Carolina. He is survived by three sisters, Jane (Tom) Piatt, Linda Mankey and Lisa (Glen) Arthur; one brother, Gary (Kathy) Gibson; a special nephew, Jacob Arthur, who was his traveling buddy every time he came home; and several nieces and a nephew. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at the Hillsview Chapel on the campus of Presbyterian SeniorCare, 835 South Main Street at 3 PM. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Wayne’s name to the Chief Petty Officers Association, P.O. 1326, Elizabeth City, NC 27906.
