Robert Eugene Reed, 92, of Washington, formerly of Canonsburg, died on Thursday, June 18, 2015, in the Donnell House.
He was born on December 2, 1922, in Pennsboro, WV, a son of the late Dorsey and Lucy Simonton Reed.
A graduate of Pennsboro High School, he was a member of Chartiers Hill United Presbyterian Church, where he was very active. He organized the first spaghetti dinner for the church.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served from March 24, 1943, until his Honorable Discharge as a Private First Class, on November 10, 1945. For his service and sacrifice, he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Reed was a mechanic, and had worked at Frank Imperatore Custom Horse Vans for twenty years, UPS, for eleven years, and IC Patsch, and Sons, for five years. He had also been a helper at the Food Bank.
Robert, who was respectfully known as the “Candyman”, loved spending time with his grandchildren, and enjoyed dartball, bowling, golf, gardening, watching baseball, and making candy and fudge.
On May 23, 1942, he married Dorothy Louise Ross, who survives.
Also surviving, are a son, William Edward (Marion) Reed, a daughter, Sandra (Larry Rush) Cunningham; four grandchildren, Michelle Stollar, Daniel William (Anita) Reed, Joseph (Michelle) Cunningham, and Amy Nichol (Thomas) Bush; four great-grandchildren, Kayla Cunningham, Hunter Stollar, and Jessica and Julia Cunningham, and his former daughter-in-law, Sharon Lalane.
Deceased are a brother, Carl Reed, two sisters, Wanda Lee Reed and Betty Montgomery, and a son-in-law, Joseph Cunningham.
Friends will be received on Sunday, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Monday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Ave., Washington.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 23, 2015, in Chartiers Hill United Presbyterian Church, 2230 Washington Rd., Canonsburg, with Rev. Donald Austin officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m., in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
Full Military Honors will be accorded graveside, by the South Hills Veteran’s Honor Guard.
