Harry "Mousey" Mckee

Harry ‘Mousey’ McKee, passed away on March 6 at Kade Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center. He was the widower of Elsie Harriet Ropp McKee of Bethel Park, PA who passed on March 8, 2001. Harry was the last of his immediate family. He was born in Langeloth, PA on February 11, 1918, the son of the late Peter and Mary Smith McKee. Mr. McKee attended Langeloth Center Grade School, Burgettstown High School and Trinity High School. He was a member of Fairhill Manor Christian Church since 1966. Mr. McKee retired from Washington Steel Corporation on February 11, 1980 after 24 years and was previously employed by Penn Manufacturing from 1940 to 1953. He also worked for McWreath Dairy, Nickels Bakery, Alcoa of Cleveland and Grinnell Company of Cleveland. Mr. McKee was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) from 1936 to 1939, serving in five camps in Pennsylvania and Virginia. In 1986, he helped form the CCC Company 2348 (Norton, VA) Alumni Association and served as Secretary/Treasurer. He was also a member of the National Association of CCC Alumni in St. Louis, MO. He attended CCC alumni reunions from 1970 until shortly before his death. Mr. McKee was a well-known local athlete who played soccer, baseball and softball, both slow and fast pitch. His baseball years spanned from 1943 to 1958. He played for McWreath Dairy in the Community League from 1943 to 1946 and subsequently played for the Alpine Club, Scott Motor and S.A. Meyers in the Wheeling Intelligencer League, winning the batting title in 1948, with a batting average of .463. He also played for Cokeburg, PA, and Van Voorhis, PA in the Pigeon Creek Wagner League. His softball teams included Washington Steel, Fairhill Manor Church and the Silver Bullets. He last played softball when he was 91 years old. Mr. McKee was a member of the Old Timers Baseball Club since 1966 where he served as Secretary/Treasurer. Mr. McKee participated in soccer, playing for the Lincoln Hill and Arden Soccer clubs in the 1940’s and 1950’s. He served as Vice President of the West Penn Soccer Association and Secretary/Treasurer of the Washington County Soccer League. In 1986, Mr. McKee was a charter member of the Washington-Greene County Sports Hall of Fame into which he was inducted in 1988 for baseball. He served as President, Vice President and Induction Chairman. Mr. McKee was a very generous contributor to many charities and organizations, most notably the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, PA of which he was a founding sponsor. Surviving members of his family are two sons: Harry L. of Sumter, SC and Thomas (Alice) of Cedar Key, FL; two daughters: Donna J. Stemski of Washington, PA and Carol A. Martz (Jack) of Camp Hill, PA; two grandsons: Harry L. McKee, Jr. (Michelle) of San Diego, CA and Edward M. McKee of Port Orchard, WA; two great-grandchildren, Edward M. Jr. and Aubrie Nicole McKee of Port Orchard, WA; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Friends will be received on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Additional visitation will be held on Saturday, March 14th, from 10:30 a.m. till 12:30 p.m., the time of service, in Fairhill Manor Christian Church, with Rev. Michael Lehman officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Fairhill Manor Christian Church, 351 Montgomery Ave, Washington, PA 15301.
