Alma Ellen Chase Balser Dunkle, 103, of LaGrange, Ohio, formerly of Claysville, went home to be with the Lord, on Saturday, March 7, 2015, in her home.
She was born on August 8, 1911, in East Finley Township, a daughter of Frederick Franklin Chase and Cassandra Elizabeth Grandon Chase.
Mrs. Dunkle worked for four years as a polisher at Duncan Miller Glass. She had also worked as a mechanics helper at the Pennsylvania Railroad, Mingo Junction Yard; at Guy Woodward’s Shop making grenades; and was owner of Sunshine Bakery.
Mrs. Dunkle had baked for Roadside Chapel for years, and belonged to Stoney Pointe Community Sewing Circle. She loved to bake, sew, and make quilts.
Alma was the oldest charter member of the Roadside Chapel, and the oldest previous member of the East Finley Church of God, in Claysville.
On August 9, 1926, she married Robert M. Balser, Sr., who died in 1965. She then married Roy Dunkle on March 25, 1967, who is also deceased.
Surviving are a son, Fred (Barb) Balser, of Lecanto, FL; three daughters, Jane Lorraine Boyd, of LaGrange, OH, Karen Revis, and companion, Rich Young, of Claysville, and Edie (Paul) O’Brian, of California; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Balser, of Washington; a sister, Mary Jane Sprowls, of Pleasant Grove; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a son, Robert Martin Balser, Jr., two daughters, Ann Hostutler, and Marjorie Ellen Balser, who died as an infant; five brothers, Harry, William, Ellis, Charles, and Frank; and a sister, Caroline Sprowls.
Friends will be received on Thursday, from 2 to 4 p.m., and 6 to 8 p.m., in the Roadside Chapel, 37 Chapel Hill Rd., Claysville, where services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 13, 2015, with Rev. Mary Sprowls and Rev. Gary A. Johnson officiating.
Burial will follow in the Washington Cemetery.
