Daniel Harrison Hammond

September 24, 1941 — January 14, 2015

Daniel Hammond, a life long resident of Washington, died Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at the age of 73, surrounded by his family. He was active in his church, varied in his interests, and loved by his family. Mr. Hammond was born in Washington, PA on September 24, 1941. He is the son of the late Helen Bonham Hammond and Merritt "Doc" Leland Hammond Jr. On December 16, 1980, he married Joyce Montgomery at Allison Avenue Baptist Church, now Abundant Life Baptist Church, who survives. Dan graduated from Washington High School in 1959. He served in the United States Army from 1969-1971. After his discharge, he worked at Joy Mining Company in Meadowlands, where he retired. His other interests included being a member of The American Legion Post 175 and The Army Historical Society. Besides his military interests, Dan was also a talented bowler. He was a member of the Alpine Bowling League and the Travel Bowling League at Brownsville. He was also a member of the Keystone Club Golf League. Mr. Hammond was an active member of Abundant Life Baptist Church where he helped with the Bible School program. Also surviving are his children: Donald Greer Jr. (Rebecca Wilson Greer), Debra Greer-McWreath (Scott McWreath), Dennis Greer, and Leslie Greer Tharp (Wayne Tharp); his brother, David Merritt of Morgantown, WV; Grandchildren: Lindsay Benzenhoefer, Adam Greer, Kyle Roupe, Malea Baxter, Anastashia Beasley, Savannah Greer, Colton Greer, Justin White, Danielle White, and Kenneth White; Step grand children: Bryan McWreath, Kyle McWreath, Evan McWreath, Chris Tharp, and Kelly Tharp; Great grandchildren: Eli Benzenhoefer, Addison Benzenhoefer, Mikayla Beasley, Trina White, and Hayden White; Step- great grandchildren: Kristina Tharp, T.J. Orum, and Shannon Orum. Deceased is his sister, Judith Hammond Zinc. Friends will be received on Sunday, January 18th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd, 925 Allison Ave., Washington. Additional visitation will be held Monday, January 19 from 11a.m. to noon, the time of service at Abundant Life Baptist Church, 269 Cameron Rd, Washington with Rev. George Garancosky officiating. Burial will be Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 10:00 a. m. at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post #175.
