Iona "Toney" Montgomery Welling

Iona (Toney) Montgomery Lindley Welling, 80, of Washington, PA., died on Wednesday, May 16, 2012. She was born on July 15, 1931, on the family farm, known as the “Kelly Place”, in East Finley Township. She was a daughter of J. Samuel and Emma Lawrence Montgomery. Mrs Welling attended the Rocky One Room School, where she walked almost 2 miles each way to get there. She then attended the Claysville High School for 3 years, then 35 years later, she went back to McGuffey School for 2 nights a week to get her G.E.D. On October 24, 1953, she married the late Eugene Lindley, and then on March 5, 1962, she married the late William Guy Welling. She attended the Living Waters Church of God, in Washington. She was employed by Tygart Valley, Hazel Atlas #2 and CCC, before retiring from Brockway Glass. She then worked for Dr. Gerald Reuben for 13 years. Mrs. Welling belonged to the MOOSE, American Legion, Neighborhood Crime Watch, Community that Cares, and was president of Fairview/E. Finley Cemetery Association, where she was on the board. She helped with the One-Room Schoolhouse reunion in East Finley. She also helped with the Covered Bridge Festival (Wyit/Sprowls), and was instrumental in restoring and relocating the Jordan One-Room Schoolhouse, to establish a permanent historical site. She played dart ball and attended the Senior Citizens Center. Surviving are 2 sons, Ronald Monte (Susan) Lindley, of Burgettstown and Mark D. (Tammy) Welling, of Washington; 4 grandchildren, William and Joshua Lindley and Kayla and Cody Welling. Deceased are 5 sisters, Mildred Montgomery, Clare Kiger, Irma Mass, Peg Brownlee and Olga Montgomery, who died as an infant; a brother, Jimmy Montgomery and many extended family members. Friends will be received on Friday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., the time of services in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Ave., Washington, with Rev. Michael Singo officiating. Burial in West Finley Cemetery, will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
